So we went over to this guy Dave’s house in Bushwick a couple of days ago, climbed up onto his roof, and bore witness to the releasing of countless kits of pigeons into the sky. Micro explosions of feathers. It was stunning. I’ve never seen anything like it. They fly in darting drunken tufts, turning in virtual unison and occasionally dropping out of the pack of other birds to tumble, a trait of Birmingham Rollers.
Dave has a couple of coops up there with over 900 pigeons, many of them Rollers, and I instantly fell in love and knew this is what I want to spend my free time doing when I’m an old man.
Like the obsessive pigeon-fancier-wannabe I’ve become, I’ve compiled an exhaustive list of relevant articles and videos. Here are my pigeon links, for the adventurous.
Dave is a childhood friend of Mike Tyson’s, and keeps many of Mike’s pigeons in his coop. This is a video of Mike’s other coop, in Harlem.
